Evgeni Malkin Speaks & Penguins Respond In Game 5 penguins game score today

Evgeni Malkin speaks and Penguins respond in Game 5 By Dave Holcomb Posted on Jun 8, 2017 (Photo by Jeanine Leech/Icon Sportswire)

Sidney Crosby may be the Pittsburgh Penguins captain, but njdwvrvo. pension age australia there is no doubt that Evgeni Malkin is the vocal leader in the team’s locker room. And over the years, Malkin has shown an uncanny ability to know exactly what to say and when to say it in front of the media.

He spoke again before Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final.

“I know I can play better on the ice,” Malkin said,  according to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review . “(On Thursday), I’ll try to show my best game. It’s timing. It’s a good time to show your best game. There’s only three games left. … I believe in my team, and I believe in myself.”

He stopped short of predicting victory as Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban did prior to Game 3, but the Penguins, as they usually do, responded to Malkin’s words.

Pittsburgh got off and running with a fantastic start Thursday night. The Penguins scored 1:31 into the game and didn’t look back, crushing the Predators 6-0 in Game 5. Pittsburgh leads the best-of-seven series 3-2. Game 6 will be at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Sunday night.

Malkin had a huge game, posting a Gordie Howe hat trick — a goal, an assist and a fight — in just 14:03 ice time, but what made his comments perfect were how it seemed to ignite the rest of the Penguins. That includes his maligned linemate Phil Kessel.

“He score,” Malkin said of Kessel before the game . “It’s his time to score.”

Every reader knows where this story ends. Yes, Kessel scored — the fifth goal of the game. Malkin’s was the third and came in the final minute of the first period, chasing Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne from the net. Kessel’s ensured there wouldn’t be a comeback.

But Kessel didn’t stop with just a single goal. He also picked up two assists. It was, without a doubt, Kessel’s best postseason performance of 2017.

That’s the best example of how magical Malkin’s words can be, but his confidence in front of the media was displayed up and down the lineup.

Crosby was magnificent, involving himself on every play (good and bad). His drive to the net in the first minute drew a penalty and set the tone for the night. The Penguins scored on the ensuing power play with Crosby picking up the assist. He had three helpers on the night.

The Pittsburgh captain also was involved in some shenanigans. There was the “light” grinding of Subban’s head into the ice and the “accidental” but very classless water bottle throwing from the bench. There is no excuse for the latter, and we will address both at length, but at another time because this night belonged to the Penguins.

After only two goals in the previous two games combined, Pittsburgh had six with six different goal scorers, and 12 different players had points. The Penguins blue line — a unit that everyone ( including myself ) — ripped heading into this contest was every bit as involved as well. Four defensemen had points, including two with goals.

Even Ron Hainsey scored. And a beautiful goal at that.

This was the third time in the last 13 months Pittsburgh came out with this type of playoff performance after bold words from Malkin. After losing 5-2 in Game 6 of the second round, No. 71 said of the Washington Capitals, “If they think they won an easy game and because of that they think they can win Game 7, I say no.” We know how that ended.

Last year, Malkin “guaranteed” the Eastern Conference Final would return to Pittsburgh when the Penguins were down 3-2 before Game 6 in Tampa Bay. It did, and Pittsburgh won Game 7.

The Penguins now sit one game away from becoming the first team to repeat as champions in nearly two decades. But the series is far from finished.

In this postseason, teams that win by six or more goals are 0-3 in the following game. That includes the Penguins, who beat the Ottawa Senators 7-0 in Game 5 of the last round only to lose Game 6 on the road.

Under Mike Sullivan, the Penguins are 4-6 in series-clinching games where they have a lead (that obviously excludes Game 7’s). In five of their last six series, they needed more than one try to eliminate an opponent.

Combine that with Nashville’s 9-1 home record, and all signs still point to a Game 7. If it gets to that point, you better believe Malkin will be doing some talking prior to the game.

Pittsburgh's Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby react after Kunitz scored the game-winning goal in double overtime against the Ottawa Senators to win game seven of the Eastern Conference Final of the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs at the PPG PAINTS Arena.  (Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports) PITTSBURGH — Chris Kunitz scored his second goal of the game at 5:09 of the second overtime in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final Thursday night to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins past the Ottawa Senators 3-2 and into the Stanley Cup Final. The Penguins, in the Cup final for the fourth time in 10 years, will begin defense of their 2016 championship Monday when the Western Conference champion Nashville Predators visit. Pittsburgh will be trying to become the first repeat titlist since the Detroit won back-to-back Cups in 1997 and ’98. Ottawa fell short of making the Cup final for the first time since 2007. Pittsburgh goaltender Matt Murray, playing on his 23rd birthday, stopped 27 of 29 Senators shots. Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson, who stopped 45 of 46 shots in Game 6, made 39 saves Thursday. The game was nearly halfway through regulation before the Penguins scored the first goal off a two-on-one against Ottawa defenseman Erik Karlsson. Kunitz one-timed a pass from Conor Sheary in tight to make it 1-0 at 9:55 of the second period. It was Kunitz’s first goal in his past 22 playoff games. Just 20 seconds, Mark Stone tied it for the Senators, taking a short pass ahead from Karlsson and, from the lower part of the right circle, lifting the puck over Murray’s glove. Justin Schultz scored on a blast from the center point at 11:44 of the third on Pittsburgh’s first power play of the game for a short-lived 2-1 Penguins lead. At 14:41 of the third, Ryan Dzingel lifted the Senators into a 2-2 tie when he scored on a rebound of a Karlsson shot. NOTES: Pittsburgh D Justin Schultz (shoulder) returned but RW Patric Hornqvist (upper body) did not. Both took the pregame warmup and were considered game-time decision because of upper-body injuries. ... Penguins LW Conor Sheary was back after being a healthy scratch for two consecutive games, replacing RW Josh Archibald. ... Ottawa C Colin White, who made his NHL postseason debut in Game 6, was scratched in favor of C Chris Kelly. Bruins/NHL
